The Occoneechee COPE and Climbing Program is a component of the Occoneechee Council,Boy Scouts of America.  The Council Headquarters are in Raleigh, North Carolina with facilities at the Occoneechee Scout Reservation in Carthage, NC. We offer a complete package of opportunities to every range of Scout, from Cub Scout up through Venture Crew. Our facilities are open year round for not only scouting groups but non-scouting groups as well.

 At our last Committee Meeting, Directors adopted the BRAKE - UNDER - SLIDE technique (BUS) as the method to be taught in all Council training programs.

The BUS belay method has been adopted by the American Mountain Guide Association, Most climbing gyms and Most Recrecational programs as the safest belay technique. It is described in the current BSA Merit Badge booklet and the BSA Topping Out climbing program guide.

The BUS method is seen as the most reliable because the rope is locked in the BRAKE position in the belay device while your hands are repositioned on the rope to take more slack.
